Dr. Nina Foley Honored at the 24th Annual AACD Scientific Session

Dr. Nina Foley was honored with a Partners in Peace Award at the 24th Annual American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) Scientific Session in New Orleans, LA because of her contribution of more than $25,000 in donated services for a single Give Back a Smile case. The primary program of the AACD Charitable Foundation (AACDCF), Give Back A Smile helps survivors of domestic violence by providing free consultation and dental treatment to restore their smiles.

"More than five million people are affected by domestic violence every year in the United States—there is clearly a need for a program like Give Back a Smile to help survivors rejuvenate their lives through the caring hands of dental professionals," Dr. Nina Foley said. "I feel fortunate to be part of such a meaningful mission."

Restoring Lives by Restoring Smiles
The official Give Back a Smile program was launched on May 27, 1999. To date, more than 6,000 AACD dentists, laboratory technicians, and other dental professionals have volunteered their time and expertise pro bono for the Give Back a Smile program. Since the program's inception, over 600 domestic violence cases have been completed for a total value of over $5 million. There are currently 288 applicants that are being treated throughout the United States and Canada.

How the Give Back a Smile program works:
  • Domestic violence survivors who have suffered dental injuries during a violent attack can call the Give Back A Smile national toll free number at 800.773.GBAS (4227).
  • Survivors must make an appointment with a counselor, domestic violence advocate, social worker, or therapist to complete the advocate section of the Give Back a Smile application.
  • If eligible, they are then referred to AACD's Give Back A Smile program for a referral to a local member dentist who makes the final determination of eligibility and, if approved, begins treatment.

Got Sleep?

Sleep apnea, a sleep disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep, affects more than twelve million Americans and causes symptoms such as loud snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness. But, wait…why are we telling you about sleep issues? We're supposed to be talking about teeth, right? Well, surprisingly enough, Dr. Foley's practice can also provide help for some of your peskiest sleep problems.

One of the latest solutions for sleep apnea and other related disorders, the Thornton Adjustable Positioner® (TAP®) is an oral appliance similar to an athletic mouth guard and can be obtained through a couple of visits to our office. The TAP® device alleviates snoring and sleep apnea by holding the mandible forward during sleep to prevent the tongue and soft tissue of the throat from collapsing into the airway, without the need for surgery, medications, or other more cumbersome therapy. The unique design of the TAP® permits the patient to adjust the device and the degree to which the mandible is pulled forward, actively engaging the patient in the treatment of his/her own sleep-disordered breathing.

Our patients have seen great results with the TAP® device, and more and more who suffer from sleep disorders are finding relief. If you are interested in getting the TAP® device for yourself, call our office at 591-0294 or click here to schedule your initial consultation, a quick 30-minute exam that will allow us to take impressions of your teeth to ensure a proper fit. When the device is ready for delivery, we'll schedule a follow-up appointment with you to go over the basic instructions for use.

And afterwards? Throw on your coziest pajamas (and your new TAP® device), and settle in for a good night's sleep!
